SYNOPSIS

I am gonna found a new political party – the Party for Peace, Faith, Light, Justice, Order and Romania’s Reconstruction. I am the brain behind it and behind this newspaper stuck on my back. Now take a picture of me. Take me right.

Twenty-three years after December 1989, Bucharest is rebelling again. Petri films it from the first days of the anti-government protests to the time of the referendum against president Basescu. In December 1989, Petri was ten. He may have been aware that December 1989 was history, but probably not that it was also cinema history - the moment when Romania’s film-makers remembered how to take their cameras to the streets. For almost 25 years now, the University Square has been a mirror of Romania’s social and political discontents. The films that captured its dynamics – from those of the Sahia Studio, to  Laurentiu Calciu’s ”After the Revolution” and to Stere Gulea/ Sorin Iliesiu /Vivi Dragan Vasile’s ”University Square”, account not only for the people’s gradual discovery of their power as citizens, but also for their changing relationship with the space and with the film-makers themselves. Petri observes, participates, listens to, and talks back to his subjects. He gives up the telephoto lens, the talking heads and the music. He films the confusion, the violence, the people asking for their pay from the party that called them. “No style can guarantee truth”, says Errol Morris. “The truth is what you feel after watching the film, not the image itself”, adds Rithy Panh. What will you feel after watching Petri’s film?
