SYNOPSIS

The border between Austria and Hungary appears to have lost its meaning since it became a Schengen border. The border stations, among them the small border crossing in Nickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom are being removed. However, the border persists culturally and socially, based on historically grown resentments and new European laws. More than twenty-five years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the border still exists as division in income and life standards. While those who live around the former border have already forgotten that it ever existed, those who travel to and within Europe without all the necessary papers are still puzzled by what is left of it. For the new-comers from other lands the border is not a line to cross anymore.
