Since 2011 our festival has been presenting documentaries at various stages of development. Filmmakers present selected edited material and then discuss them with an audience and with invited experts. This is a laboratory open to our small industry and to the general public, a platform for discussing new themes and means proposed by filmmakers. The operation takes place, as it were, with no anesthesia, at a moment where the tissues of the film, the intimate fiber of the creative process, still throb, exposed. This early exposure is an act of courage for filmmakers who need our constant encouragement. The risks, it seems to us, are far outweighed by the benefits of informing the public early about upcoming projects and of filmmakers sharing their concerns in a transparent and welcoming framework. Because, after all, documentaries are a form of social dialogue. And if documentarians don’t step up with courage, who will?
