Kazuo Hara and Sachiko Kobayashi - A Retrospective

Kazuo Hara is Japan’s most esteemed documentary film-maker. With a career spanning over several decades, during which he has made five documentaries, he has collaborated throughout his entire life with Sachiko Kobayashi, who produced all of his his films, four of them part of the retrospective programme put together by One World Romania 2018. The films of Kazuo Hara and Sachiko Kobayashi distinguish themselves through their interest in giving voice to unusual fighters, on many occasions sparking heated debate on the topics of (im)morality and the “correct” approach to characters. And they share one more thing in common: their concern with exposing intimacy, often times in its brutal, and therefore shocking, forms. It’s not by accident that one of the titles of their films uses the wording “extremely private” - it is the most accurate description of the two film-makers’ main preoccupation with forcing their audiences to perceive with their senses “the other” as a human being, who is truly different and worth their respect, despite the human brain’s habitual and constant search for ways of identification.
