Filmed in a Belgian village, Children of Chance is a To Be and To Have (directed by Nicholas Philibert, 2003), with an added dose of multiculturalism – that is, a film about childhood, learning, identity and, not least, about the crucial role played in a child’s life by an inspiring teacher. Brigitte Waroquier works with her 11-year-old pupils to prepare them for the first major challenge of their school life - an exam that marks the end of primary school. All but one of the children are Muslims of Turkish origin, their parents or grandparents having relocated to Belgium decades ago in search for better lives as miners in Cheratte. Now their descendants must find their feet in an uncertain present, after the mines have closed and Muslims in Europe face a backlash in the aftermath of terror attacks; but their teacher Brigitte is there to support them all the way.
