One of the most interesting literary figures of the Civil Rights era and its aftermath, James Baldwin was friends with the likes of Nina Simone, Allen Ginsberg, Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, or Jean-Paul Sartre. The film re-imagines Baldwin’s last, unfinished, book through archival images and current news events, juxtaposing the cultural construction of the African American with the Hollywood illusion of masculine heroism: white, cool, oblivious to guilt and privilege. At the same time, Baldwin’s discourse on iconic civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. or Malcolm X helps viewers vivisect with lucidity our present, in which white supremacy surges once more in America and elsewhere.
