“Sennan Asbestos Disaster” - European premiere at One World Romania 2018

Kazuo Hara and Sachiko Kobayashi’s latest documentary – „Sennan Asbestos Disaster” will have the European premiere in Bucharest, at One World Romania Festival. It is their first documentary in 20 years and until now it was presented in Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Busan International Film Festival and International Film Festival Tokyo Filmex and it will premiere in Japanese cinemas on March 10th 2018.

For eight years has Kazuo Hara followed the legal battle between the Japanese government and tens of former workers in the asbestos mines of the small town of Sennan. They are survivors of specific diseases – asbestosis, lung cancer – that plagued the asbestos mines workers who had no idea the kinds of dangers they were being exposed to. Through an unpolished style – like life itself – the documentary first draws individual portraits of all these aged people who have to suffer unbearable pain. Within this descriptive, apparently classical structure, Hara inserts flashes of the protagonists in agony or with their face while lying dead. Although the documentary follows the case of this particular group of individuals who search for justice in the world, it also explores themes such as the sufferings caused by illness and death.

In the section dedicated to the two filmmakers, we will also show three other famous films: “Goodbye, CP”, “Extreme Private Eros Love Song 1974” and “The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On” (film situated on place 23 in a top of all-time best documentaries, published by BFI in January 2017).
