Filmmaker Erika Cohn was studying Islamic feminism and teaching film in Israel and Palestine when she met Kholoud Al-Faqih. Already harbouring an interest in the points of convergence between culture, religion, gender, and the practice of law, Cohn felt inspired by the uplifting story of the first woman appointed as a judge in a Shari'a tribunal, after centuries of women being excluded from positions of decision-making. The film documents Al-Faqih’s work as a judge in an institution with an extensive history of misogyny, and her response to a system that continuously tries to limit her impact. Though this story, that of a woman who, in order to continue to help other women, must first address her own rights, Cohn tells a much larger story about the resilience and determination required for women to win their rightful place in the world.
