What does daily life look for somebody with a fatwa looming above their head? Iranian rapper Shahin Najafi has been called the “Salman Rushdie of rap”—because, like Rushdie, he has to live with an edict imposed against him by hardline Islamic clerics in response to perceived blasphemy. Filmed in Germany around the time of the tragic attacks from Bataclan, this alert vérité documentary captures the everyday struggles of an exiled musician torn between his need for artistic and political freedom and the responsibility he holds for the lives of those dear to him. Advancing from one point of crisis to another, this film is a moving commentary around the loneliness of the long-distance dissenter.
