The OWR RETROcessions

At the One World Romania 2018 edition we have presented more documentaries than ever before, we are fully aware of the fact that many of you could not see all the films they would have wanted. This is one of the reasons why, until the next edition (March 15-24th 2019), we decided to organize a series of screenings so that you can make up for what you lost during the festival.

The second reason for the OWR RETROcessions series is our wish to actively participate in building a solid documentary culture in Romania. We wish to be around constantly and the OWR RETROcessions joins all our other programs that are going on all year-round. Keep in touch, we are about to announce other exciting projects!

The first screening of the series will be that of the documentary The Trial: The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov and will take place on Monday, June 18th from 08:00 p.m. in Sala Bolților of ARCUB.
This film closely follows the Russian show trial of Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, a former participant in the Euromaidan protests and a militant against the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula. For some, this may be a chronicle with an ending foretold, given that Sentsov has already been sentenced to twenty years in prison, having been charged with arms trafficking and with organizing a terrorist cell. But by focusing on this case, which has become part of collective memory, director and cameraman Askold Kurov produces an important record which gives us an opportunity to reflect on the inner functioning of a repressive system, on the repercussions for those who stand against such regimes, and on our own responsibility to support them in their heroic acts.

All the money coming from the tickets sold for this screening will be donated in the account opened by the European Film Academy for supporting the wife and kids of Oleg Sentsov.

Tickets are sold throught the platform of our new friends at Eventim. The complete schedule of the screenings is available below.

So Help Me God

Can a documentary be a delicious and scandalous police procedural? It can. Investigating Judge Anne Gruwez gardens with her white rat, rides through Brussels in a vintage Citroën, only to arrive at an office where she investigates horrid homicides, dominatrixes, and cold cases which she reopens with the help of two police investigators descended straight from central casting of crime series. Directors Jean Libon and Yves Hinant touch this delicate subject with neither solemnity nor excessive voyeurism. Behind the humor of the characters and the shock value of the cases themselves, however, hides a meditation on the need for a humanistic, emotionally intelligent approach to justice.

Upwelling. Deep Waters Rising to the Surface
directed by: Pietro Pasquetti, Silvia Jop

Messina is a city built on the ruins of a disaster. Port of entry for the black plague to Europe, razed almost flat by multiple earthquakes, devastated by allied air raids, this small Sicilian town rallied its energies time and time again from deep within itself, like the strange phenomenon governing the straits on its shore: wind currents emboldened by the Earth’s rotation bring to the surface deep waters carrying strange organisms rarely washing on the shores of the Mediterranean. It seems only fitting that here, when traditional political parties sunk into disaster, new, unforetold energies rose on their ruins: a Buddhist surrounded by an environmental movement, artists and activists given to utopian thoughts of equality. A melancholy impressionistic comedy filmed with aesthetic grace and ethical thoughtfulness.
