These otherwise quite different short films share a focus on work. Communist ideology relied heavily on the notion of work as the basis of social relationships, therefore it comes as no surprise that professional activity of all kinds is offered such a good place in the spotlight in cinema, be it fiction or documentary. Work appears as liberating or surprising, traditional or inspired by technological progress. What does the tone of a film say about the time in which it was made? To what extent can an author's stamp be found in the images that we consider propaganda? The subtle presence of dissidence, social compassion and stylized aesthetics is striking and makes us reconsider what we thought we knew about art under authoritarian regimes.
The films selected are New Technology, Educated People (Alexandru Sîrbu, 1963, 16 '), Reeds (Titus Mesaroș, 1966, 9'), People Telling Stories (Ovidiu Bose Pastina, 1983, 10 '), Some Day Will Come (Copel Moscu, 1985, 12'), Elevation Zero and Elevation Zero - director's cut (Laurențiu Damian, 1988, 13' and 10').
The films are introduced and supervised by researcher Adina Bradeanu (University of Oxford).
The screening is part of an extensive focus on the fictions of reality, that lasts during the entire duration of the month of January.
