Launched in 2022, "Docs at the Library" is the most recent educational project organised by the One World Romania Association, in partnership with Mediawise Society and KineDok Romania.
"Docs at the Library" takes a bold step to increase the media and image literacy skills of the general public, with documentary film as teaching material. At the same time, the project represents a long-term effort to enrich the work of rural, county, municipal or neighbourhood libraries, activating them as cultural hubs and signalling their usefulness as accessible nodes of knowledge.
Each year, the project is carried out in two stages: the first is a series of media education courses for librarians. Participants then apply the knowledge gained in order to organise film screenings and debates for their libraries’ visitors, during the second stage of the project. The documentaries screened are Romanian productions and are part of the KineDok catalogue.
The media literacy courses are held by Ionuț Mareș, film critic and journalist, and Nicoleta Fotiade, media and digital literacy trainer and president of Mediawise Society. The trainers have developed a course material that aims to show librarians the potential of documentary film as a media tool for debate on human rights issues.
The project started in 2022 in Dâmbovița, Gorj and Tulcea counties, continued in 2023 in Bucharest, Dâmbovița and Vâlcea, while in 2024 it took place in Dâmbovița, Ialomița, Neamț and Teleorman. In 2022, the 65 librarians who participated in the courses organised 85 events in 48 libraries. In 2023, 60 librarians organised 78 events in 28 libraries. During 2024, 94 librarians benefited from the courses and 60 screenings took place in 27 libraries.
