Aurelien lives with a disorder situated on the autism spectrum characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication. Over the whole course of the film director Diego Governatori places him right in front of us, forcing us to consider all kinds of things and most importantly to challenge notions such as “normality” and “disease”. Our protagonist is intelligent, charming, sensitive, and has an exceptional ability to express himself. His discourse obsessively reiterates and relists his deficiencies and their social consequences that he cannot control despite being perfectly capable of identifying their sources, which, at first, remain almost invisible to the viewer. However, as our relationship with him develops throughout the film, our initial assessment – hasty and superficial – becomes less and less likely. The process of realising that his mental reality is a very particular one sharpens gradually with the additional help from Governatori’s style choices, meant to give it texture. We recognize that we are different, and this could be the beginning of a beautiful fascination. (Andrei Rus)
