Spurred by the childhood memory of his friendship with a young Italian girl, a Second World War refugee taken under his family's wing right after the war, director Markus Imhoof embarks on an investigation into the fate of all refugees recently rescued by the Italian authorities from the Mediterranean. The director focuses his attention both on the reasons that determine refugees and economic migrants to leave their native countries - war, terrorism or poverty (sometimes bolstered by the economic policies in Europe, which continues to undermine the national economies of the African states) - and on the different ways in which the policies of European countries toward refugees and economic migrants influence the attitudes of those who come into direct contact with these groups and who, in turn, can decide their fates according to their own ideologies and biases.
