In a small American provincial town a girl named Suzana identifies herself as a male named Coby. Starting in his late adolescence, he undergoes different treatments which, in time, help him become the man he had always imagined himself as. The protagonist records this entire journey of physical transformation, and the resulting video-diary becomes the starting point for the documentary, which, years later, finds Coby, his girlfriend, his mother, his father and his brother in a stage of their lives where they’ve completely accepted his new identity. Rather than focusing on the hardships experienced by a trans person over the course of their gender reassignment process, Christian Sonderegger’s documentary is a mature and complex meditation on the profound and diverse implications of such a decision both for the person who makes it, and for their loved ones. The film’s greatest feat is being able to approach its subject without exoticising him, accepting both the normalcy of his situation, but also the existence of various obstacles that he needs to overcome in order to become the best version of himself.
