A photo from the late 90s shows a group of Hollywood producers celebrating the death of film stock before the premiere of the Phantom Menace episode from the Star Wars series. In Michael Palm’s film, this phantom is cinema itself, in its classic form, radically transformed by the revolution film production underwent in the process of transitioning from an analogue medium to a digital one. Oozing essential information, packed with excellent interviews with famous filmmakers, such as Christopher Nolan or Martin Scorsese, and film theory stars and critics, such as David Bordwell, the film asks legitimate questions, naturally left without an answer. The film archive workers’ labor is rightfully eulogised as are their efforts to stand up to the unbelievable challenges the preservation of film heritage poses in the digital era. Will humanity lose this enormous collective memory? Cinema Futures conveys the future of cinema in the shape of a thrilling drama mixed with dystopian sci-fi elements.
