Turkey. Winter. Snow. A retirement home neighbouring a new building complex under construction. The home is the land of memory, where elderly residents reminiscence about their lives, traumas, loves, and lovers. Always visible through the windows, the construction site is the metallic land of the future, where young workers are building a complex which many of the residents of the home will not live to see completed. This debut film from Shevaun Mizrahi may surprise you in the program of a human rights festival. Although in no way an urgent film, it is profoundly disquieting. As the camera quietly observes the passing of time in these bodies gliding towards their demise, it reminds us, with a discrete Tarkovskian touch, of the beauty and poetry of life, whether seen in the future or in the past. Two men in an elevator: “Do you think life is a dream? No, I think it’s an illusion.”
