So, what can a bunch of giraffes tell us about the world? Hopefully more than a conventional documentary about life in the Israeli-occupied territories would. This charming film about a zoo in Palestine is also a bitter allegory about the country’s conflict with Israel, as observed on the micro level of human relationships. This story of a vet who dedicates himself to bringing his zoo up to European standards gradually turns into an elegy for a world that has to fight for each moment of normality. The tender and moving tale of animals, people, cages, walls, and checkpoints reminds us of our need to dream of the giraffes roaming beyond our imperfect political worlds.
