How does school work when reimagined as a democracy? In this Berlin high school, the students are fully responsible for the running of their institution. The school was established as a last chance for students over 17 years of age who were unable to integrate in other schools but were still willing to work to obtain their final graduation exam. Relieved from the pressure of grades but overwhelmed by the abundance of newly found responsibilities, these students slalom between exciting literature classes held in their teacher’s garden, less exciting cleaning sessions, and critical moments where they must raise their own fees in order to keep the school running. Through all this we see their development as individuals, and begin to question the idea of freedom in education.
