With visible pleasure, an elderly woman colors in a simple flower drawing. Elsewhere, another learns to read, helped by her daughter. Child mother is a film about individual wounds perpetuated within families from one generation to another. Built around the conversations between four adults and their mothers, this tonally hushed film unveils the complexity of the relationships within families formed through the marriage of an underage girl with an older man. In the tight spaces of their private kitchens these women, married off as young girls, are learning to look back towards a traumatic past that, until now, they could not openly confront. Their difficult personal histories continue to be relevant today, where child marriage remains a culturally sanctioned custom. “Mother, may I hug you?” / “No.”
