“European films are films produced in Europe and reflecting European values. These films are directed by European directors and produced with European funding”, states an EU official at the beginning of Jan Gogola’s short film. Ceske Velenice Infinity is itself part of one such production - the omnibus Across the Border, co-produced between Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia on the occcassion of the first wave of accessions to the EU. The film brings together five film-makers to present their vision of nation and identity at this unique point in history. Gogola’s take on the topic is an irreverent, absurdist crash course on the meanings of the border in a small town on the Czech-Austrian border and on the new combination of enthusiasm, anxiety, bureaucracy, and euro-entrepreneurship that make up the fabric of the present.
