In 1939, W.H. Auden wrote the poem “Refugee Blues” inspired by the indifference and antagonism faced by Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany seeking asylum elsewhere in the world. In 2016, filmmakers Stephan Bookas and Tristan Daws edit images of daily life in the refugee camp outside Calais to audio of Auden’s poem read by a refugee. Their melancholic images of human devastation invite us to reflect on the perils of the refugee experience throughout history and in our times.
