Twenty-five years after her uncle Miguel died of AIDS, his niece, filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo, embarks on a journey to excavate a family secret. In the 1980s Miguel had moved from Puerto Rico to New York City to pursue a career in the theatre. When he died, after years of trying to reconcile his gay identity with his Catholic upbringing and his disapproving mother, neither his disease nor his partner were mentioned in his obituary. Through an atmospheric collage of old photos, letters, home movies, interviews, and contemporary vérité footage, Aldarondo exposes the trauma imprinted on Miguel’s life by the secrets and the denial that were part of his persona during his entire life. At the same time, the film emerges as an oblique commentary on the paradoxical way in which religious faith acted as a destructive force for Miguel even as it served as a vital, redemptive force for his former partner.
