Father Cataldo Migliazzo is a well-known exorcist in Palermo. Dozens of people regularly come to him to be saved from the devil. When necessary, he also performs mini-exorcisms on his cell phone, closing jovially with best regards for the rest of the afflicted’s family. Father Cataldo is only one in an army of exorcists encouraged by the Catholic Church. Delicately, with understanding, and sometimes humor, this film follows four people looking for salvation in Palermo, and explores wider themes including unhappiness, alienation, and the melancholy of contemporary life, insecurity and uncertainty, as well as the meaning of mental and spiritual health. The observational, factual style of the film stays away from the clichés of the horror genre and neither judges nor romanticizes the demand and supply dynamic behind the practice of exorcisms.
