Researchers warn that by 2024 there will be twice as many 80-year olds as there are today. Of these, 75 percent will need some sort of in-home health care; others might suffer from severe loneliness or could develop dementia. Alice is a 60 centimeter tall, emotionally intelligent Caredroid designed by a research lab in Holland to meet the future care needs of the elderly. During its trial stage, in the company of one of the engineers who designed her, Alice leaves the lab to pay regular visits to three retired ladies who usually spend their days on their own. While Alice’s hosts need company, the researchers who designed Alice need to understand more about what needs to be improved in her behavior. In a touching and poignant film, Sander Burger follows the budding relationship between the three women and a robot, offering no easy answers, but surely some hope for the future.
