More than any other sport, soccer has always been exploited by politicians. Since its founding in 1936, the Beitar soccer club in Jerusalem has prided itself on being ethnically pure, while its supporters, who call themselves “La Familia,” have become famous and infamous for their anti-Arab chants. Enter the new owner of Beitar: Russian oligarch Arcadi Gaydamak, whose political ambitions include running for Mayor of Jerusalem. But in 2012, Gaydamak brings in two Chechen players who become the flashpoint of a massive conflict between the leadership of the club and its nationalist extreme-right supporters. Russian-born investigative journalist Maya Zinshtein paints a balanced but still alarming portrait of the role identity and discrimination play in Israel today.
