Two women caught in a web of corruption and lawlessness tell their stories. They are as different as they are symptomatic: in a country where authorities are at best powerless and at worst accomplices, one woman lost her freedom, while the other—her only child. One is thrown without real cause into a Dantesque jail dominated by fear, violence, and the law of the cartels. The other, a clown in a family circus, is looking for her daughter who was probably abducted by the son of a corrupt policeman. But we see neither of these two tragedies. What we do see in this poetic and formally original film is only the present: the trip back from prison, a road movie through a turbulent, cloudy country, on the one hand, and the daily routine in a provincial circus kept together by a family’s hope that one day the nightmare will end.
