Firmly anchored in the present, this extraordinary film premiered at Cannes days before the final verdict against Hissein Habré was given. It shocks by taking an unflinching frontal look at one of the cruelest regimes in recent history: the campaign of arrests, torture, and executions conducted by Habré while he was President of Chad between 1982 and 1990. While the rest of the world concerned itself with the Cold War between two Northern hemisphere rivals, Habré killed about 40,000 victims with support from his United States allies and from France, which even financed the country’s political police. While Habré stands trial in neighboring Senegal, where he fled, Clément Abaifouta, an activist representing survivors of the regime, revisits the horrors of the past in direct conversations with victims and perpetrators alike.
