When president Alan Garcia and the Peruvian government attempt to pass new legislation to extract oil, minerals, and gas from untouched Amazonian land, indigenous leader Alberto Pizango makes an impassioned plea to stop the destruction of the rainforest: the extraction involves constitutionally protected lands which belong to the native minorities. The conflict escalates into highly publicized strikes and violence, which result in injuries and fatal casualties on both sides. Shot over several years, this tense, eloquent, and immersive documentary collates a wide variety of material to construct a gripping unitary narrative: from local news footage and interviews conducted by the filmmakers with Peruvian officials and citizens, through raw footage shot by people on both sides of the conflict, to contemplative, lyrical images of the rainforest which recur throughout the film as a sign of the long process of healing that follows the violences in Bagua.
