In Kurdistan’s mountainous dessert, a band of women prepares to fight against ISIS. Being killed by a woman means that you are banished from Paradise in the understanding of ISIS fighters. The women in this film gladly carry out their mission — but none of them look blood-thirsty. Rather, they come across as compassionate, philosophical, and only a little ideological. Carefully composed, painterly images present us with portrait after portrait in intimate close-ups that evoke the youth and the vulnerability of these soldiers in training. And that is all we are allowed to see. We never see them in battle: intelligently, discreetly, the film stops at the precise moment of silence and tension that precedes the dehumanizing chaos of battle. So many films were made about the horrors of war. This is a film about the humanity of war.
