In 2009, when the housing crisis devastated Spain in the aftermath of the financial crisis, Ada Colau helped set up a grassroots organization which championed the rights of citizens unable to pay their mortgages and threatened with eviction. Several years later, in May 2015, Colau was elected the first female Mayor of Barcelona on behalf of “Barcelona en Comú”, a new citizens’ platform launched only the previous year and backed by several left-wing parties. Ada for Mayor is an intimate chronicle of Colau’s career from the beginning of her candidature and up to her election as mayor of the Catalan capital. The film captures Colau’s combination of charisma and determination, while documenting the inner struggle of a woman who tries to remain herself and to avoid alienating her core supporters while attempting to obtain a position of power that she has often questioned before.
