“Full-time activists have no gender,” says activist Ye Haiyan, aka Hooligan Sparrow. Yet the film that bears her name offers a raw look at women’s activism in China. When a Chinese elementary school principal who raped six of his students seems poised to receive a light sentence, a group of activists, including Haiyan and human-rights lawyer Wang Yi, start protesting a crime that, we learn, is only the tip of the iceberg, as school administrators routinely bribe officials by supplying them with underage girls. Marked as enemies of the state, the activists are under constant government surveillance and face harassment and imprisonment. Through raw, gripping, guerrilla-style footage which includes shots taken with secret recording devices and hidden-camera glasses, this film documents not only the courage and fiery activism of the woman in front of the camera, but also the dedication and confrontational style of the woman behind it.
