Oriented follows the lives of three gay Palestinian friends as they confront their national and sexual identities against the backdrop of today’s Tel Aviv. Whether a Muslim living with a Jewish boyfriend, a Palestinian nationalist confronted by guilty Jewish love or ‘simply’ a young gay man struggling to come out in front of a conservative family, each of them has his own set of personal conflicts to deal with, adding to the tense situation of the country: As one of them puts it, they are ‘a new Palestinian generation’ – one that we haven’t yet had the chance to meet. Film-maker Jake Witzenfeld chronicles their personal dilemmas, through the familiar language of gossip and confession, in an attempt to stay truthful to the way in which each individual is affected by his own individual circumstances, as well as by the violence which surrounds all of them. Determined to change their lives and learn more about their condition as political individuals, by forcing themselves out of their comfort zones, the three friends form a group meant to promote non-violent cultural resistance and to fight intelligently and with humour for gender and national equality. While their work may not change the world, it certainly helps them learn about themselves and move forward in life with a sense that they, and nobody else, are the ones who decide which way they want to go.
