"A sane man would never come to work here. You come here because you’re a fool", says Davor. He is twenty-two-year-old and he wants something different. Perhaps a solution would be to leave the small mining town of Lubnica in Serbia, where he has lived his whole life. Working in the coal mine, like his father, is no life, no ambition. But Davor’s career options are limited. In the poor region in which he was born, the only option is to descend into that dark, like his father did and still does on a daily basis. The film develops beautifully the metaphor of working in the dark, providing a frame for observing life in Serbia today, where disaffected people are losing hope that a change of course is possible in their lives. Davor and his father talk openly to the camera about their doubts, fear and hopes while carrying out their hazardous work underground. An intimate portrait of a young man growing up and struggling to carve out his own destiny, In the Dark refuses to provide ready-made solutions to the complex dilemmas that people are confronted with. Through an intelligent, carefully choreographed camerawork, film-maker Goran Stanković captures with sensitivity the daily life of the two men who spend their lives together, whether above or below the ground.
