Ya’abad is a small, old Palestinian town 20km West of Jenin in the West Bank. For generations, Ya’abad and the adjacent villages have been relying on the charcoal workshops in which timber is burned in open air to produce coal, as their main source of income. The production cycle of that coal reveals how, in some twisted way, the Palestinian and Israeli economies are closely interconnected, despite conventional images of separation. Dirty Business focuses on day-to-day ‘micro’ reality of trade and cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians and exposes the legal loopholes which make that trade possible: trees cut in Israel and sold to Palestine to be burned into coal, and then resold back to Israel.
