A whole world can fit into a ray of sunshine – or at least small particles of it, refracted ad infinitum. From sunny California, an orange orchard seems to preserve the memory of the orchards in yesteryear’s Jaffa, awakened as a warning that history can repeat itself, that urban expansion can strike again, in any corner of the world. Separated by oceans and countries, the orchards come together in the filmmaker’s dream of turning cinema into a complete unveiling of the absolute truth, as well as in the father’s dream of keeping illusion and hope intact. Zaina Bseiso uses the images of an orange orchard in an attempt to tell us about reality and illusion, about the relevance of truth in a time when it’s increasingly harder to discern between the core of things and all the layers above it.
