"By the light of a half-lit lamp lies all of Kanpur City," sings a voice at the beginning of the film. The sky above Kanpur is darkened by power cables illegally strung by the locals, with help from Loha Singh, the Bollywoodesque hero of the local electricity war. A whole day without electricity is a common occurrence in a city where the power company Kesco, caught in a circle of corruption and bribery, fails to deliver on its promises to the citizens. But how do you change a shady system? 

When the woman appointed head of the local division of Kesco starts a war on the illegal taps, and attempts to inject some honesty in the company’s relation with their customers, the ‘power issue’ is hijacked by a local politician and things snowball to an unexpected denouement. ‘If you want to change things, ‘then everything suddenly becomes extremely difficult for you,’ confesses the woman. ‘Every time you try to change something, there will be thousands of people attached to the old system, who will not want that system to change.’ Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Wait for the flowers and the official speeches at the end, then think of a similar situation a bit closer to home. Yes, you guessed it.
