Soviet Russia had Aleksei Stakhanov as the epitome of the model worker. But Yugoslavia’s Alija Sirotanović defeated him. The legend goes that when Tito offered to fulfil one wish for him, Sirotanović requested a bigger shovel. Sirotanović was pictured on the 20,000 Yugoslav dinar banknote that was brought out on May Day in 1987. Some 25 years later, a film crew asks youngsters to identify the man on the banknote. They cannot, but their elders remember not only Sirotanović but also the ‘shock labour’ camps of yesteryear, which they enthusiastically try to revive. Long live Yugo-nostalgia!
