Some stories can only be told looking back at one’s own image projected sometime before their birth. For instance, the tumultuous story of the French Guiana can fit into history books, but what better way to ponder over events than to enter a dialogue with one’s personal past? The citizens of Guiana felt on their own skin what it means to have the rug pulled from under their feet when de Gaulle decided to turn their homeland into a space center, and his colonial dream came to life through deforestation and the forced displacement in a modern space, with all the promised comfort crammed into a concrete apartment building. The filmmakers’ grandfather evokes the rain rockets, the forests evaporating in the noise of the bulldozers, a tranquil water stream which has long dried up – all that lingers on the translucent thread of memory, all the life and dream fragments that we hold on to. The title does justice to the film: the images are the echo of long-faded heartbeats, or perhaps of wings which still pulsate with life. (Andreea Chiper)
