One would think that thorough investigations and murders belong to fiction, that detectives only exist in noirs and in what is most precious in Hollywood’s history. Chloé Galibert-Laîné is here to destroy the myth of fiction and embarks on an investigation which keeps us on the edge of our seats, by digging into archives and dissecting the images of a film in an almost surgical manner: the film of the murder, the ultimate and, at the same time, the most elusive source of information. Starting from Chris Kennedy’s “Watching the Detectives,” the director pieces clues together, analyzes texts and images, and explores the conspiratorial universe from the depths on the Internet, as she pursues a relentless enquiry into the 2013 Boston Marathon terrorist attack. Her weapons are the very weapons of cinema: the harmless scalpel of an editing software. What remains of her detective endeavour is not the proverbial movie chase, with guns and dangerous criminals, but it’s nevertheless an unforgettable experience, an equally funny and serious documentary – the way films should actually be made.
