“This is Lipiny. There is no future here. You can get killed if you don’t give somebody a cigarette”. Lipiny is a soot-blackened industrial area reputed to be the poorest city in southern Poland. Misery and hopelessness are everywhere. In Lipiny, everybody knows the basic truths: “films are better than life” and “dreams are not important, as they never come true”. But Daniel wouldn’t let small-town malaise crush his dreams. With a mobile phone camera in his hand, he roams the streets asking schoolmates and grownups questions about their dreams. Did any of those come true? Might any come true in the future? (Adina Brădeanu)
