“I couldn’t write. I burnt a hole in a piece of paper and gave it to somebody to give my mother, knowing that she will understand my situation”. When she was just ten years old, Sabere was sold to a man forty years her senior, according to a traditional Afghan tribal practice. The father who sold her is now struggling to save her, while trying to delay the handing over of his other daughter - herself ten-years old, just like Sabere seven years before, herself traded for fifty sheep by the father, allegedly to ensure the survival of their impoverished family.
