“States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an Axis of Evil, arming to threat-en the peace of the world”, said George Bush in his State of the Union address in January 2002. While some regarded the phrase as nothing more than empty rhetoric designed to appeal to audiences, others interpreted the recurrence of the word ’evil’ as the beginning of a new process of demonization. It is from the polarity of good and evil that film-maker Vybeke Bryld starts her documentary metaphor about story-telling as a crucial element in the fabric of our lives - from the moral values inculcated during childhood, to the public rituals of international politics.
