Atacama, the most barren desert in the world, has the clearest sky which allows sciences to research on the origin of life. The depths of the salty and dry land preserved testimonies of the pre-Columbian era and of the times of the mining exploitations as well as a history of the deaths of Pinochet`s repressive regime. Besides archaeologist and astronomers, a group of women look for their missing loved ones whom were murdered and buried under the barren Chilean desert. Documentarist Patricio Guzman gives a poetic touch to his inquiry in the problem of historical consciousness. His inquiry regards the responsibility held by a country willing to engage in advanced research in the age of the Universe, but is not willing to look back at the moral and social disaster of its recent history.
