Why was it necessary that 2 million people, almost a quarter of Cambodia population, die? Theth Sambath, whose family was murdered by the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot, is an investigative journalist who tries find the answer to this question by interrogating those responsible for the genocide that took place in the second half of the 70`s. Without a sign of revenge or fury Sambath obtains stunning testimonies from criminals that were in the field, on the plains of death, who submitted to their superiors and made themselves responsible for the murder of thousands of people. He even manages to obtain the testimony of Nuon Chea, Pol Pot`s right hand man, who is still convinced of the necessity of removal of the “enemies of state” whom otherwise would have undermined the revolution.
