The Oath tells the story of two men who worked for Osama Bin Laden: Abu Janda, his former bodyguard, now a taxi driver in Yemen, and Salim Hamdan, former driver, now a prisoner at Guantanamo Bay and the first man to appear before the controversial military court of the prison. By presenting the personal stories of the two, Laura Poitras manages to humanize and contextualize what Western media has demonized. As Hamdan's trial progresses, we find fundamental flaws in the court's system. As we follow Abu Janda's interactions with his son, with youth in Yemen, with journalists and even his taxi passengers, he reveals the complex evolution of his values and belief system after the events of 9/11.
