Around 10.000 political prisoners and resistance fighters have been executed without being trialed and buried in unknown places during the communist regime. Marius Oprea, the director of the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile, accompanied by archeologists, criminalists and medical examiners are searching for, identifying and bringing to the light of day the earthly remains of those killed by torture or shooting and establish the circumstances and causes of their death. This lengthy and laborious process is an essential step in shedding light into the recent past and a sign of respect to those who believed in the necessity of doing away with communism once and for all.
