The photographs taken by American soldiers in the Abu Ghraib prison have affected both the course of the Iraq war and America’s image. The Academy Award winning documentarian Errol Morris talks to those who took part in the events depicted by the photographs and tries to reconstitute the big picture, the context and the motives behind the snapshots. All those involved have explanations for each and every photograph, ranging from the standard procedure of obtaining information to the importance of exercising authority over the enemy. Eventually, the answer is unanimous: the war changes one’s priorities and the nonexecution of orders generates unpleasant consequences for the individual. However, how is it that it has come to this situation of extreme disconsideration of the human being remains a question to be answered.
