Warm-up OWR18: Odessa
15 March 2025

“Visit the ’30s before the ’30s visit you”

The 2013 documentary Odessa, dealing with one of the darkest moments in Romania’s recent history, returns to One World Romania for a special screening in the context of the discussions about the far-right and the Iron Guard that emerged after the now canceled presidential elections. The film directed by Florin Iepan will be screened on Saturday, March 22, from 18:00 at the Peasant Museum Cinema, as the last warm-up screening in preparation for the 18th edition of OWR.

The screening will be followed by a discussion on how extremism from the 30s is reflected in today's society, with Odessa director Florin Iepan and journalist Cătălin Striblea.

Based on the massacre from October 1941, when Romanian soldiers, without any German assistance, burned alive more than 22.000 civilians, mostly Jews, in the occupied town of Odessa, Iepan starts the first public debate about the fascist past of Romania. Odessa follows, with a certain amount of self-irony, the painful and convoluted process through which Iepan discovers the web of complicities and the initial mechanisms which eventually led to the ethnic cleansing carried out by Romanians during the war and inquires to what extent those prejudices and mechanisms of thought can still be found in today’s Romania.
