After more than a year of documentary films, after numerous discussions with guests and the public in the Czech Centre, the time has come for a more comprehensive approach. More movies, more guests, more specific topics. During the six days of the first festival One World Romania, we want to address some of the most burning human rights issues and debates in the world, such as Burma, the Olympic Games in China, political prisoners in Cuba, the plight of women in Africa, as well as child labor and minorities and their fight for a place in society.
These issues are not only examples of unrelenting intolerance, oppression and trauma. They also tell stories of support, hope and human dignity that spearhead change in communities.
It is not always easy to watch the films, but we believe it is crucial to learn about the abuses that surround us, to debate them and to take action. We are all connected, on a small and on a large scale; all our decisions have consequences for other people and communities. We need to remember this.
I hope that this festival will become a tradition. I hope it will play a role in building a tolerant, responsible society here in Romania by reaching the open, curious and critical public who wants to make the world a better place.
